WINNING WAYS

A brief History - Richard Whitaker

Richard & Liz Whitaker

Richard & Liz Whitaker

Everyone loves a winner!
Richard's winning record has been excellent over the past few years and is consistently in the 8-10% ratio of winners to runners. Total prize money won in 2008 was £205,444; £111,540 of that being win money. And 2008 saw an impressive 5 of the 6 homebred 2 year olds (Hellwood Stud) winning! Richard achieved another ambition in 2010 winning local race, the Great St Wilfred at Ripon with DAMIKA. And MEY BLOSSOM was outstanding in 2010 wining FIVE races.

Previous notable winners include CAPTAIN RIO (Group winner), ORIENT (5f record holder at Ascot), CLANTIME, LAGO DI VARANO and more recently TABARET, who won a Listed race at York in 2006 and DAMIKA 2nd in a Listed race in 2008.

DIAMOND BLUE won on her first visit to the racecourse in 2011 AND it was a Racing Post Bonus Race!
ICY BLUE came of age winning 2 races, and SAM NOMBULIST also broke his Maiden tag. RIO's ROSANNA and WOTATOMBOY added further wins to their statistics.

Richard began training in 1977 at Hellwood Farm, prior to which, he was a top class Point-to-Point rider. Simon was also a regular rider, so they both have a feel for race riding as well as training. For ten years, Richard trained from Grange Park Stables at Wetherby, but as the property was redeveloped into 'mews cottages' in 1996, the Whitakers moved back to their original training establishment at Scarcroft.

Richard believes in keeping his training fees at a reasonable rate whilst also ensuring that the horses have the best care. "Racehorse ownership should be fun and we try to make it enjoyable for every owner, win or lose".
